WALMER AND LAAPLAN FLOOD VICTIMS

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will work around the clock to accelerate the preparation of sites for the recent flood victims from Walmer and Laapland following the completion of procurement processes.
In Walmer, temporary houses to relocate the flood victims needed electrification. Electrification was delayed by the procurement processes of material needed. All the material has arrived today, 30 August 2024.
The work will commence throughout the weekend. The targeted completion time is by the end of next week. On completion, the relocation will commence with victims getting access to legal electricity, water and sanitation services.
In Laapland, the construction of temporary structures was put on hold due to environmental assessment requirements. For the project to start, an environmental specialist had to be appointed to monitor and guide the construction company on the environmental matters.
The specialist has been appointed, a process plan has been made, with construction expected to start in the middle of September 2024.
With all the matters that were causing delays resolved, the Metro will work around the clock to make sure that in both sites victims are relocated far before the expected summer rains.
