NETL Researchers Present at DOE's Cybersecurity and Technology Innovation Conference

NETL experts in energy research-related artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) and the Energy Data Exchange (EDX®), which curates U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research data, demonstrated how their work aligns with DOE's cybersecurity and technology innovation goals at the recently concluded DOE Cybersecurity and Technology Innovation Conference (CyberCon) in Dallas, Texas.

CyberCon is an annual capstone event designed to strengthen relationships, provide training and practical exercises to enhance the capabilities of the information technology, operational technology and cyber workforce, and share best practices and lessons learned promoting cybersecurity and innovation priorities.

In addition to DOE officials, attendees at CyberCon included leaders from other federal agencies, academia, international partners and private industry. The event educated participants on cybersecurity, modernization of information technology and operational technology, data management and shared tools that are all geared toward technical solutions to meet national challenges.

An NETL Mission Technology Table shared information about DOE national labs' cybersecurity and technology innovation efforts and how NETL's Science-based AI/ML Institute (SAMI), EDX and EDX Spatial support those initiatives.

SAMIdevelops and uses data science methods to gain scientific insight from complex, high-dimensional, high-volume data sets from experiments and simulations conducted in support of energy technology development and is beginning to use machine learning to advance energy technology development.

EDXis a virtual platform that provides public access to ongoing research sponsored by DOE's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management. NETL built EDX to support researchers and the use/re-use of data products.

NETL also hosted a Cyber Technical Outreach Table that featured promotional videos for EDX and SAMI and explained how EDX data migrated to the cloud. Participants also learned about the evolution of EDX Spatial,which now features interactive tools, maps and dashboards. The team provided AI guidance for how to use SAMI in a responsible and secure manner.

The Lab's Kelly Rose spoke in two Mission Spotlight Sessions to highlight projects and efforts in DOE that align with cybersecurity and technology innovation missions and goals.

NETL's Tammie Borders, Ruishu Wright and Wei Shi, participated in a panel session on "Quantum Sensing and Overcoming the Data Wall," as a part of a session devoted to DOE Innovations: Serving the Nation.
