REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. - Mark Smith brings some powerful game to his job as the Energy and Utilities subject matter expert for Installation Management Command's Sustainment Directorate. So, it's no wonder his coworkers are amped up about his recent selection as a 2024 Department of Energy Federal Energy Program Spotlight Honoree.

The FEMP FEDS Spotlight Recognition Program provides an opportunity for federal agencies to recognize employees going above and beyond typical day-to-day responsibilities to achieve mission success while also cutting energy waste, reducing costs, and optimizing performance.

Smith was selected in the Individual Professional Achievement Category and his role in guiding 32 Army Installations with the development and execution of their Energy Resilience Conservation Investment Program and Resilient Energy Funding for Readiness Modernization Program.

IMCOM ID-S, located in Huntsville, Alabama, oversees the base operations at 10 IMCOM garrisons and 22 Army Terminals, Depots, Activities, Arsenals, and Plants. A large footprint of the responsibility falls in the lane of the Directorate of Public Works, which is involved with virtually every piece of infrastructure-related business.

As modernization and energy efficiency become higher priorities across the Army and Department of Defense, the wattage of impact in the energy arena has also grown, putting those with a focus on those operational efforts at the forefront of changing the ways energy is managed and resourced at a wide variety of installations.

Balancing the unique operational needs and meeting the requirements to support the mission is something Smith excels at, according to his supervisor, Mary Dotson, who is the DPW Chief at ID-S.

"Mark truly understands all aspects of the energy and utilities process from start to finish," she said. "The warfighter relies on us to deliver reliable infrastructure across the board. From infrastructure to energy to utilities, said Dotson.

"What we provide is the blueprint for ensuring the services and products provided in support of the warfighter meets the need at the point of delivery, and Mark integrates all of that seamlessly. This award reflects his passion and commitment to his profession, and I am thrilled he's being recognized at the federal level for his efforts," she said.

Smith will be honored with other honorees at a ceremony on October 17, 2024, in Washington, D.C.
