New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer announces additional volunteer opportunities at Hope Center

New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer announced additional volunteer opportunities at Hope Center today. With the overwhelming community support, the Hope Center has streamlined the process and listed several positions with descriptions for potential volunteers to learn more about each role. The Hope Center has hosted dozens of groups and hundreds of volunteers annually.

"We love our Hope Center volunteers, from local Girl Scout troops to folks who work at Fortune 500 companies to retirees, to sororities, fraternities, churches and synagogues, they come from all walks of life to help makes others lives a little bit better," said County Executive Meyer. "With this new list of positions and job descriptions, it will allow those who are interested in volunteering to see what role suits them and their talents best. It's a win-win for the volunteers and the Hope Center guests."

Hope Center Volunteer Job Opportunities

Front Desk Hospitality Liaison

  • Anytime between 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Answer the phones at the front desk.
  • Transfer calls to relevant parties, take messages, answer general questions.
  • The only requirement is to be kind and hospitable!
  • Position would require a background check, and confidentiality waiver.

Greeter and Kindness Spreader

  • Best time - morning (7 a.m. to 10 a.m.) and afternoons/early evenings (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.)
  • Stationed at the desk by the elevators.
  • Greet Hope Center Participants as a friendly face to start the day.
  • Listen to any concerns and take notes to share with Hope Center leadership.
  • Review Hope Center daily activities, or special events and remind Participants of activities.
  • Answer general questions (training on where all services are located, case management staff, phone numbers for onsite programs)
  • Help case monitors as needed so general knowledge of mail, intake door and where food bags are located for special populations.
  • Position would require a background check, and confidentiality waiver.

Hospitality Liaison

  • Best time: before daily intakes come to the Hope Center. Approximate time 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. during the week.
  • Arrive and see front desk staff to get a list of intakes for the day.
  • Intakes include room number, family size, ages and sex of family members, whether there are pets.
  • Conduct inspection of room. We will provide a general checklist of what should be in each room.
  • Personalize/welcome the family by adding extra toiletries, welcome note and/or other items to make sure room is ready for household and welcoming.
  • If room is not ready for family, communicate with Hope Center staff on what is needed for room to be ready.
  • Note items that are not completed on checklist and share with Hope Center staff.
  • Sort and organize sheets in linen room.
  • Position would require a background check, and confidentiality waiver.

Meal Server

  • Best time: evening 5-7 p.m. Any day of the week.
  • Help Hope Center staff with dinner preparation and serving of dinner.
  • Coordinate food donations, help with putting food on ice, and on trays to be brought to the Ballroom.
  • Serve dinner and make sure Hope Center Participants abide by general rules of the ballroom (wait in line, children first, no seconds until everyone is served).
  • Help with clean up, wiping tables, washing serving items.
  • Help clean out refrigerator/freezer for food beyond sell by dates.
  • Personalize your experience - bring music, gifts, special desserts or snacks.
  • Position would require a background check, and confidentiality waiver.

Help Desk/Computer Searches Guru

  • Special skills:have a laptop you are willing to use to help Participants search for housing, jobs, and other issues that require technical assistance. (we can help train too).
  • Best time - flexible but afternoon (3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) is best.
  • Help with housing searches, completing rental applications and other duties needed by Participants.
  • Stationed in the atrium with a HELP DESK sign.
  • During downtime, search for housing that might be available and willing to call landlords, apartment complexes to check availability.
