Durbin, Duckworth Announce $2.6 Million To Prevent Youth Substance Use In Illinois

WASHINGTON- U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced $2,624,906 in federal funding going to 21 Illinois coalitions through the Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Program. This funding will be used by communities to achieve and sustain a reduction in local youth substance use, tackling issues ranging from tobacco prevention to opioid misuse.

"It is our duty to ensure that every Illinoisan has the opportunity to grow up in an environment free from the scourge of addiction and substance use," said Durbin. "The Drug-Free Communities Program equips local organizations with evidence-based strategies to prevent drug use and promote healthy lifestyles for children. These funds will allow neighborhoods across Illinois to confront this issue head-on while providing a lifeline to those who need it most."

"The epidemic of addiction and substance abuse has taken far too many lives," Duckworth said. "Resolving this crisis requires a comprehensive effort from local organizations and officials at every level of government. I'll continue working with Senator Durbin to help ensure our local prevention programs, like those involved with the Drug-Free Communities Program, have the resources they need to continue treating and preventing addiction in our communities across Illinois."
