Residents are reminded to exercise caution using fireworks

SAVANNAH - City of Savannah offices and facilities will be closed Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Emergency services will remain open.

The City reminds residents to exercise caution if using fireworks on the Fourth of July. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the only safe way to view fireworks is to attend a professional show. Celebratory gunfire is not allowed in the City of Savannah at any time.

According to City and State law, fireworks are allowed to be discharged between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on July 3 and July 4. All firework use and ignition must be handled by a person of 18 years or older.

Fireworks are not permitted in the right of way of a public road, highway, or railroad; indoors, any place where a person is deemed a trespasser; within 100 yards of an electric plant, water treatment plant, retail gasoline sales, flammable liquids, facilities engaged in processing flammable liquids, electric substations, a jail or prison, public use air facility, hospital, nursing home, or health care facility.

Fireworks are also not permitted in any park, historic site, recreational site, or other property owned by the State or the City unless permitted by controlling agency.

Sanitation services will be affected by the holiday closure. Residents can expect the following changes to their schedule:

Residential garbage collection and yard waste collection services will not run on Thursday, July 4. Collection services will resume on Friday, July 5 and proceed on a one-day delayed schedule. Street sweepers will not run on Thursday, July 4. Regular service will resume on Monday, July 8. Recycling will not be impacted and will proceed as scheduled.

Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station will both be closed on Thursday, July 4. Dean Forest Landfill will reopen Friday, July 5 at 7 a.m. Bacon Park Transfer Station will reopen Friday, July 5 at 9 a.m. for regular operation.
