Senate Commerce Committee Undertakes Critical AI Work; Additional Guardrails Still Needed

Washington, D.C.- This morning, the Senate Commerce Committee will mark up a series of bills to regulate the use of AI.

Richard Anthony, emerging technologies policy advocateat Public Citizen, issued the following statement ahead of the markup:

"Chair Cantwell has done commendable work in advancing bipartisan legislation to ensure AI is developed and deployed responsibly.

"Public Citizen urges Senators to immediately pass both the Artificial Intelligence Research, Innovation, and Accountability Act of 2023 and the TAKE IT DOWN Act. But these bills alone won't be enough - Congress must continue working on additional AI guardrails to address emerging risks and ensure that AI serves the public good for all, not just some. We call on Senate and House lawmakers to prioritize comprehensive AI regulations that protect privacy, prevent bias and misuse in democracy and in non consensual intimate images, and promote ethical standards and transparency for consumer facing AI systems."
