Welcome to Autumn of 2024!

For all those who are beginning to deal with their leaves, please see some friendly reminders below:

LEAF ETIQUETTE

  1. Make It Accessible - Place leaves within 5' of the BACK of the curb, away from parked cars, mailboxes, landscaping like rock beds, mulch beds, loose soil, etc., small pets, and small children! But seriously, if the leaf truck is coming, be safe and get the kids and pets back, those puppies are powerful suckers.
  2. Keep your leaves off the streets! Please try at least! We know you can't fight the wind some days, but you can take some preventative measures. Remember this rhyme - Leaf Tea Causes Algae.
  3. Clean Piles - Try to remove large sticks or other debris from your piles. No yard waste, large sticks, pumpkins, rocks/gravel, etc. Place any brush in a separate brush pile well away from your leaves - Brush Collection Schedule.
  4. Don't worry! It will get collected and your lawn will survive the winter! Just because a leaf pile has been sitting behind your curb for a couple of days, doesn't mean the City has chosen not to provide you with your leaf collection service, there are likely a lot of leaves that have fallen in the City and we do not have enough staff or vehicles to circle the entire City every 5 or so days. On average the City's Public Works Crews can collect at each curbline every 12-14 business days.
  5. Be Neighborly - Summon your inner Mr. Rodgers. Send those neighbors struggling with their leaf etiquette to this website to learn more - https://www.mymonona.com/255/Brush-Leaves-Yard-Waste OR show them our video - https://youtu.be/eY6UAUIJmnA?si=smwpJ3WZztnFMGux.
  6. REUSE THEM - Create mulch, compost, etc. For other ways to dispose of leaves please visit this website - https://www.mymonona.com/1009/Sustainable-Yard-Practices.

ADOPT A STORM DRAIN YARD SIGNS

if you are already signed up to adopt a storm drain, please do not forget to get that yard sign out in front of the house. In all honesty, given the amount of inundation that we all get on a daily, hour-by-hour, minute-by-minute consistency with political ads, wouldn't it just be better to look at something that makes some people genuinely happier? So, I say, place that "Lend Lake Monona Your Helping Hand" sign out proudly on display and make the community a better place! If your yard sign is looking drabby and in need of a pick-me-up, please let me know and I'll drop off a new one for you!

If you are not signed up to adopt a storm drain, please visit this website for more information - Monona Adopt a Storm Drain Program.

RAIN ALERTS

If you haven't already, please sign up for the rain alert emails from the Dane County Land and Water Resources Ripple Effects Page - Texts OR Email.
