Earlier this summer, California State University, Bakersfield partnered with Bakersfield College for a five-week research program that gave 47 students hands-on lab and field experience, working alongside biology, computer science and engineering professors from both schools.
The BC/CSUB Summer Research Program, which is now in its third year, ran from May to June and was funded by two Department of Education Title III-F HSI-STEM and Articulation grants awarded to BC and CSUB, respectively. Additional funding from the Taft College Foundation allowed Taft College students to participate as well.
The research program is part of CSUB's School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Career Pathways Program, also funded by the DOE grant. Dr. Charles Lam, mathematics professor and the grant's principal investigator, said the program "helps STEM majors to achieve their dream careers."
"We believe that STEM majors should start exploring their career options early, and to gain experiences along the way," he said. "This invaluable research experience with professors from both CSUB and BC will enhance their education and prepares them for a future career in STEM."
With many students transferring from BC to CSUB each year, Dr. Lam said it made sense to work with the community college to bring research opportunities to even more students.
"With this program, besides research, we also help BC students get oriented with CSUB as they think about their transfer plans," he said.
