Welcome our new street sweepers and help name the fleet

Published on August 25, 2024

New street sweepers have arrived in Fort Worth and will start sweeping in September!

The new fleet consists of 12 new street sweepers that will help to clean up dirt, debris and trash from major city streets while promoting a cleaner, safer, greener Fort Worth. This new fleet will help staff improve city cleanliness by expanding sweeping routes, increasing cycle frequencies and promoting a clean city.

When will sweepers roll out? Environmental Services equipment operators who will sweep with the new fleet will receive onsite training in Fort Worth with the street sweeper manufacturer, TYMCO, starting next week. Training will wrap up during the first week of September, and the sweepers are expected to be on the move starting Sept. 6.

To celebrate the arrival of the new fleet and the positive impact it will have on the community, the City of Fort Worth is announcing two ways the public can get involved with the new sweepers.

"Our team is so excited to receive our new street sweepers," said Cody Whittenburg, environmental service director. "It is another step towards our unified goal to create and maintain a clean, safe and attractive City."

In October 2023, City staff began the process of researching and purchasing street sweepers and recognized global fleet supply chain challenges. Over the past year, the City has partnered with Sweeping Corp. of America (SCA) to begin sweeping key routes.

What happens next? Starting in September, the 12 new sweepers will assume SCA routes and work to develop and expand a rotational schedule to other City streets. SCA will remain under contract with the City for special projects or support as needed. TxDOT highways are not included.

Sweeper photo opportunity: On Sept. 10, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., some sweepers will be available for photos. They will be stationed at old City Hall at 200 Texas St. in the south parking lot. This is a great opportunity to see a couple of the sweepers up close before they really hit the road. Staff will continue to watch for other opportunities for residents and community partners to learn more.

Name the Sweepers Contest: Participate in the Name the Sweepers Contest, where you can submit your ideas online no later than Sept. 30. This contest gives residents the chance to submit fun, unique ideas to help name each sweeper. Names will be selected by November and will be displayed on the side of new sweepers in the future. This is a free contest open to all Fort Worth residents and helps to promote a litter-free community.

How to enter the contest:

  • Get creative: Think of fun, catchy names that you think would be perfect for the new sweepers.
  • Submit your ideas: Visit the City of Fort Worth litter webpage, and fill out the Name the Sweepers Contest entry form by Sept. 30.
  • Winners: After the contest closes, submissions will be reviewed, and winners will be announced in November. The best 12 names will be displayed on the new sweepers when they start their first routes.
  • See a full list of contest rules.
