Volunteer Spotlight – Eric Rahlfs

First Mid is honored to recognize Eric Rahlfs, Financial Advisor with First Mid Wealth Management in Carmi, IL, as our Volunteer Spotlight for November 2024. Eric is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.

What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? Through my volunteer work, I focus on supporting causes that benefit the youth in my town and surrounding communities. One of my main commitments is to the Carmi Kiwanis Club, which aims to serve children around the world. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to serve as an officer, board member, and even Past-President. Since my son loves baseball, I also find joy in helping coach his summer league teams. Additionally, I serve on the board for the Carmi Christmas Elves, an organization that provides new shoes to children in need through programs like Christmas Lights of Hope and Kicks for Kids. My involvement with First Christian Church of Carmi is another important part of my volunteer work. Through all these efforts, my goal is to help show other children the same kind of love and care I give to my own.

What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? While volunteering can be time-consuming, the rewards far outweigh the commitment. Volunteering is deeply fulfilling, not just for the people you're helping, but for yourself as well. Whether it's seeing a child's face light up when they receive a new pair of shoes, witnessing the growth of young athletes throughout a baseball season, or helping secure funding for organizations that serve children, the emotional rewards are incredible. You can experience that same joy and fulfillment by stepping up and giving your time to a cause that matters.

What are ways you think others can get involved? There are countless ways to get involved in volunteering, and it all starts with finding something you're passionate about. I recommend beginning by researching different civic organizations that align with your interests. For me, joining Kiwanis was a turning point. Through Kiwanis, I met so many people who were connected to other causes, and that opened doors for me to get involved with organizations that matched my passion-helping kids! Once you connect with one group, you'll often discover even more opportunities to make a difference in areas that resonate with you.
