The Linz Center of Mechatronics Ltd. (of which the JKU holds a 25% share) managed to impress the jury with a new design of a high-speed electric motor intended for fuel cell air supply systems (FCAS).
As the installation space is generally very tight, the air supply motor also has to be exceptionally small and light, yet powerful. Pankl Turbosystems' and LCM's optimized FCAS could even be used on board unmanned zero-emission aircrafts. Presented as part of the Austrian Association for Electrical Engineering's (OVE) Innovation Day on November 13, 2024, in Vienna, the 2024 OVE Innovation Award was accepted on behalf of LCM by Johann Hoffelner (managing director), Hubert Mitterhofer (Business Area Manager Drives), and Josef Passenbrunner (head of the Motor Technology team).

Johann Hoffelner (LCM managing director) believes the project award is a signal that LCM and Pankl Turbosystems is driving energy transition forward. He remarked: "LCM's guiding principal is 'turning science into reality'. The key to success, especially in energy transition, is to turn scientific research into commercial success."
