Why should I go?

Boston's North End is famous for its massive block party celebrations honoring Catholic saints. This weekend is the 110th annual feast of Saint Agrippina of Mineo, the patron saint of evil spirits, leprosy, and thunderstorms.

Saint Agrippina is said to be a princess who was tortured to death by Roman Emperor Valerian in 256 AD because of her Christian faith. After her death, her body was transported from Rome to Mineo in Sicily, and this journey was believed to be full of miraculous events that protected the passengers who carried the body of the saint. This festival is a celebration of the journey of miracles.

The four-day festival kicks off today, with members of the Agrippina Benefit Society carrying a life-size statue of the saint on an ornate 2,000-pound canopy down the streets of the North End. Patrons affix dollar bills to the statue as it passes, and the proceeds support the church on Hanover Street that bears Agrippina's name.

The remainder of the festival includes live shows, DJ music, and band performances. If all the dancing and celebrating makes you hungry, grab a snack from a roadside vendor or pop into one of the North End's many restaurants. Finish your night with a cannoli or scoop of gelato.
