Meet the 2024 Vertex Science Leaders Scholarship recipients

Inspiring future innovators, breaking down barriers and opening the door to educational opportunities - the Vertex Science Leaders Scholarship program is an integral part of our STEAM education commitment made nearly a decade ago. Since the scholarship's start, multiple alumni have launched successful careers in life sciences.

Each Vertex Scholar receives a four-year award that funds tuition at any four-year higher education institution in the U.S. The program also provides support for books, room and board expenses, study abroad costs, and/or summer courses.

We're excited to introduce you to this year's Vertex Scholars who are gearing up for their first year in college!

Name: Daniela Neria Garcia
University: San Diego State University
Major: Nursing

Daniela Neria Garcia is determined to change the world.

A first-generation incoming college student, Daniela is pursuing a nursing degree. "I want my patients to feel like they are being cared for, listened to, and provided with the best treatment no matter their background or socioeconomic status," she said.

Her passion for helping people started at a young age. "However, it was my freshman year of high school in my honors biology class where my interest in science grew. It didn't take long after that to know that a nursing career was meant for me. I could combine and do the two things I am passionate about: helping others and science," said Daniela.

After spending two summers at Vertex, Daniela is ready to hit the ground running at college. "While interning with the Molecular and Cell Biology team, I've learned all about cells, human disease and lab work. Plus, Vertex has inspired me to be passionate and work hard to make a positive change in people's lives."

They sky is the limit for Daniela, and we can't wait to see what she achieves.

Name: Sumeya Aweys
University: San Diego State University
Major: Nursing

One word to describe Sumeya Aweys - driven.

"This scholarship is more than just financial aid; it's a recognition of my hard work and dedication. It's a reminder that my parents' sacrifices and support have given me the foundation I need to succeed. It's a symbol of hope for my future and a testament to the power of education."

The first in her family to attend college, Sumeya is going to study nursing alongside fellow scholarship recipient Daniela. "I want to bridge the gap between language barriers and cultural differences and become a role model for aspiring professionals from marginalized communities and diverse backgrounds," said Sumeya, whose parents are from Somalia.

This summer she interned with the Molecular and Cell Biology team. "I developed my ability to understand and communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, a vital skill for a future nurse," said Sumeya. "I've witnessed firsthand the incredible impact of having a team of individuals from various backgrounds."

Any team would be fortunate to have Sumeya, and it's clear she has a bright future ahead.

Name: Brandon Douglas
University: Tufts University
Major: Electrical Engineering

Brandon Douglas built Legos before he could talk.

With a natural curiosity for how things work, Brandon dug into software development during his internship with the Data, Technology and Engineering (DTE) department. One of the most valuable skills he walked away with? How to communicate and be a part of a team with a united goal - tools that will help him in his journey to becoming an electrical engineer.

"After college, I hope to be a part of a team of engineers working on developing a new piece of technology that is going to help move our world forward. I've always been inspired to be a part of something that helps someone, and engineering is going to help me do that."

And Brandon is determined to follow his dreams. He said the quote "Do. Or do not. There is no try," said by Star Wars Jedi Master, Yoda, is his motto. "Every time I do something, I make sure to give it my all and not be hesitant. Even when you are wrong, when you give it your all it really helps you learn from the mistakes and keep moving forward."

Pairing his passion for electrical engineering with his love of helping people, Brandon is sure to spark change.

Name: Sharmarke Mohamed
University: Dartmouth College
Major: Biology/Pre-Med

An aspiring doctor and avid traveler, Sharmarke Mohamed wants to heal the world through science.

"Combining my passion for research with my love for helping others, this career path holds great meaning for me," said the first-generation college student. His summer internship with the Cell & Gene Therapy Process Development team brings his dream closer to reality.

"There are so many beautiful things about Vertex. The company's groundbreaking work presents a tremendous opportunity to make a difference in millions of lives," added Sharmarke. "Being a part of Vertex and potentially contributing to their research brings me closer to achieving my goal."

Excited for college, especially playing in the Squash Club, Sharmarke lives by Nelson Mandela's words: "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

"Throughout my academic, athletic, and personal journey, I have faced failure and challenges. However, I have learned that resilience and perseverance are key to overcoming obstacles and achieving excellence," said Sharmarke.

With his fearless pursuit of excellence, Sharmarke is on track to make a positive impact on people's lives.

Vertexians across the globe are wishing the Science Leader Scholars the best of luck as they head into an exciting school year filled with new opportunities to learn, explore and innovate.
