September 2024 APA Board Meeting Summary

Board Authorizes State Land Master Plan Process and Approves Cranberry Lake Campground UMP Amendments

RAY BROOK, NY - At the September Agency meeting, the Adirondack Park Agency Board authorized staff to proceed with the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan amendment process, approved an amendment to the Cranberry Lake Campground Unit Management Plan, and was briefed by the Hudson River Black River Regulating District and SUNY-ESF.

First, following an overview of the 2024 package of proposed amendments to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan, the Board authorized Agency staff to initiate coordinated review under the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) and proceed with public hearings and a public comment period. A schedule for public hearings will be released after the SEQRA process is completed. Highlights of the proposed amendments package include classification of the Four Peaks Tract and adding climate change, visitor use management, and accessibility requirements to the Unit Management Plan development process. The full details of the package can be read online.

Next, the Board approved amendments to the Cranberry Lake Campground Unit Management Plan, allowing the NYSDEC to proceed with constructing a rustic playground in the campground. The project replaces an existing paved parking lot and amphitheater, and therefore avoids tree cutting, wetlands, and other impacts. The full details of the project can be read online.

Finally, the Board was provided with two informational presentations. The first was by the Hudson River Black River Regulating District, which discussed their authority and projects, and how their work intersects with the Agency's jurisdiction. The second was by SUNY ESF Associate Director of Research Dr. Stacy McNulty, who briefed the Board about the history of natural resource policy decision-making in the Adirondack Park. This presentation was followed by a Board visit to the SUNY-ESF Newcomb campus on Friday to learn more about resource management strategies on the property.

The mission of the Adirondack Park Agency is to protect the public and private resources of the Adirondack Park through the exercise of the powers and duties of the Agency as provided by law.
