Man Arrested in Two Separate Shooting Incidents

BOULDER, Colo. - The Boulder Police Department has arrested a man in connection to two shooting incidents that occurred in the city this week.

Today's incident began just after 2 a.m. when an adult male was transported by a personal vehicle to the hospital with a gunshot wound. The victim told police he was shot by an unknown male, but due to good investigative work, officers were able to identify a possible suspect.

That information led them to the suspect's home in the 1700 block of Baseline. Further investigation resulted in detectives being able to connect today's shooting with a shooting that occurred Friday night in the 1600 block of 28th Street. In Friday's incident, someone reported hearing gunshots at approximately 9 p.m. but when officers arrived on scene, no victims were found and there were limited leads.

Detectives continued following up on several leads, which resulted in finding Friday's shooting victim. He is an adult male who was shot in the shoulder but did not seek medical attention until today.

After identifying the suspect in both incidents and knowing that he was armed with a gun, multiple teams were activated to contact him and safely take him into custody. At approximately 11:15 a.m. today, the suspect surrendered to officers and was arrested without incident. At least one firearm was recovered.

The suspect's name is John Paul Gaudreau, 35, of the 1700 block of Baseline, and he has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, a domestic violence enhancer, reckless endangerment and violation of a protection order. Additional charges are pending.

The victim and suspect in Friday's shooting were acquainted. It is believed that today's shooting stemmed from an argument between two men who did not know each other.

"Crimes such as these don't happen often in our community. When they do, they generate fear and are extremely concerning to our agency, and we will take the perpetrators into custody as soon as possible," Interim Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said. "Since Friday, our detectives have been diligently working to identify the individuals involved in that case. The successful arrest in these crimes is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our Investigations and Patrol teams, and I am thankful that our tactical teams were able to safely take this suspect into custody without further injuries to anyone."

As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
