Volunteers Power Welcome Weekend and More

Muskingum University student, faculty, and staff volunteers powered the range of events that welcomed new and returning Muskies back to campus for the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Move-In Day for new students took place on Friday, Aug. 23, where upper class students, faculty, and staff helped incoming Muskies take their belongings to their new dorm rooms.

Following Opening Convocation that afternoon, Welcome Weekend kicked off, with a variety of fun events and activities from Friday through Sunday to help new Muskies get to know the campus and each other.

Director of Student Engagement Sarah Dailey credited the more than 60 student volunteers with the success of the Welcome Weekend offerings. "Their help is critical for the set-up, running, and tear down of the multiple events on the Quad, Chess Center, and other spaces across the campus," she said. "Additionally, our division's student workers - such as Resident Assistants, Muskie Preview Leaders, and Welcome Weekend leaders - all dedicate volunteer hours far beyond their paid responsibilities."

During the first Friday evening of the year, Aug. 30, the student-led Muskingum Programming Board (MPB) partnered with the Office of Student Engagement to hold Muskie Fest, with inflatables and yard games on the Quad.

For New Concord Community Day on Aug. 31, students from many Greek organizations and athletic teams volunteered through the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications for set-up, event activities, and clean-up. Their efforts helped connect new students with the Village of New Concord and brought the campus community together with area residents.

On Sept. 3, student organization volunteers staffed tables throughout the Quad for the annual Involvement Fair. New Muskies learned about the wide range of clubs and activities on campus and began to choose their own interests and volunteer opportunities.

Student volunteerism on campus continues regularly throughout the year, making possible the countless events that build a strong Muskingum community.
