DLA Energy employee seize opportunity for professional growth through DLA Shadow Program

FORT BELVOIR, Va. -

After seeing the Command Action Group promote the Defense Logistics Agency Shadow Program, DLA Energy Middle East Deputy Director James Elliot felt compelled to seize this opportunity.

Elliot took part in hands-on learning experiences throughout his five-day shadow program journey with DLA Energy Deputy Commander David Kless at the McNamara Headquarters building on Fort Belvoir. The opportunity for direct engagement allowed him to participate in meaningful conversations that are often limited in his role overseas.

"Over the course of four days, I had the unique opportunity to interact with Mr. Kless, ask him questions on various leadership topics, and observe his problem solving processes," Elliot said. "He was very open and shared key moments he faced as a leader, providing valuable insight."

Elliot was particularly impressed by the strong rapport Mr. Kless shared with his team, reminding him of how essential it is to build meaningful relationships and uphold a positive work atmosphere.

As part of DLA Energy's Talent Management Program, the year-round program spans three to five consecutive days and enables selected civilian employees from GS-7 through GS-15 the opportunity to select a senior leader to shadow. The shadowing experience allows participants to closely observe the daily responsibilities of a DLA Energy leader. It is designed to provide participants with valuable career development opportunities, professional networks, exposure to senior leadership and a thorough understanding of DLA Energy.

Kless is no stranger to the DLA Energy Shadow Program, having mentored around 20 employees in-person and remotely, as well as hosting more than 10 DLA employees who shadowed him. He appreciates the profound impact these experiences have on both mentor and mentee participants.

"I see this as a great opportunity for me to become a better leader and see where my biases and blind spots may be," Kless said. "My favorite part is helping others achieve their personal and professional goals, while also enabling me through questions and feedback to be a better, more complete leader.

Participating in the shadow program offers a great opportunity to delve into the complexities of DLA and its operations. It helps participants gain insights beyond their specific positions, enhancing their understanding of the DLA mission.

"The opportunity to meet new people and witness leadership in action was incredibly enriching" Elliot said. He is confident that this experience will benefit the region he supports, and he looks forward to applying these skills at DLA Energy Middle East.
