Fargo Public Library to Host Author Kao Kalia Yang on Saturday, August 10

Hmong American writer, teacher and speaker will visit downtown Main Library

In collaboration with the Japan Outreach Initiative, the North Dakota Asian-American Arts and Cultural Initiative presents an author talk with award-winning Hmong American author Kao Kalia Yang on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. at the downtown Main Library. The event will feature a meet-and-greet with the author, a writing prompt discussion and a book signing. All ages are welcome to this event, and no registration is required. Kao Kalia Yang is a writer, teacher and speaker. Her work crosses audiences and genres. An award-winning author of the memoirs "The Latehomecomer," "The Song Poet," "Somewhere in the Unknown World" and "Where Rivers Part," Yang has an extensive body of writing including the children's books "A Map Into the World," "The Most Beautiful Thing," "The Shared Room" and "The Rock in My Throat." Yang's work has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Book
Critics Circle Award, the Chautauqua Prize, the PEN USA literary awards, the Dayton's Literary
Peace Prize, and garnered four Minnesota Book Awards. Yang is a McKnight, Soros and Guggenheim fellow.

The North Dakota Asian-American Arts and Cultural Initiative is a nonprofit organization founded in 2022. The organization creates programs designed to promote cultural exchange and foster civic engagement.

This event is part of the Fargo Public Library's free 2024 Summer Reading Challenge that runs through August 17. This year's theme celebrates adventure and learning and offers a summer filled with exciting stories, weekly special events, performances and activities for all ages - kids, teens and adults. Anyone can participate by reading, attending events and completing challenges. The Fargo Public Library's Summer Reading Challenge is sponsored in part by the Friends of the Fargo Public Library.

All Fargo Public Library events are free and open to the public. Adults must accompany children ages 9 and younger.
