Bipartisan Group of Over 300 Local Election Officials Sign Open Letter to Connecticut Voters

"We are a team of elected officials who are committed to ensuring voters' rights are protected and secure, and that no obstacles stand in the way of the voting process. Governing and politics are not one and the same. Today, we want to take an opportunity to reinforce that although we are members of different political parties, we are united in our commitment to ensure safe, secure elections for all, regardless of political affiliation.

Whether training poll workers or serving voters, our top priority is always the protection of our constituents. As proud Connecticut elections officials, we strive to uphold the tenets of voter rights: to make certain ballot access is not restricted, no eligible voter is disenfranchised, and the election process is secure.

We are proud to serve and protect this cornerstone of democracy. We are proud to call ourselves Registrars of Voters and Town Clerks."

At the September conferences for the Registrars of Voters Association of Connecticut (ROVAC) and Connecticut Town Clerks Association (CTCA), Secretary Thomas presented the letter as an opportunity to further build voters' confidence in the security of the voting process and send the message that their work as election administrators, not political affiliation, is their top priority.

"I wasn't sure how the groups would respond, but I thought it was important to let voters see what I see every day," said Secretary Thomas. "I want voters to know that political affiliation has no significance when executing our election responsibilities, our motivation is solely to protect Connecticut voters and their voting rights. I was moved when my suggestion brought on a standing ovation at the ROVAC conference and was gratified that over 300 officials signed on."

"Election security and unimpeded ballot access are always top of mind for registrars," said Chris Prue, president of ROVAC. "The preparation for early voting for this year's elections has helped to build a camaraderie between Registrars on both sides of the aisle and with their Town Clerk colleagues as well."

"It takes a village to ensure our elections are safe and secure, there is no space for political partisanship when it comes to standing up the very cornerstone of our representative democracy," said Patty Spruance, president of CTCA. "Town Clerks' commitment to serving the public extends beyond their office to the work of their registrar colleagues and are proud to be working as a team."

Note: Additional Registrars of Voters and Town Clerks wanted to sign on but were not present when the pages were circulated.
