Senator Murphy Statement On Results Of Venezuelan Election

WASHINGTON-U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Monday released the following statement on the results of the presidential election in Venezuela:

"This election was marred by repression well before Venezuelans started casting ballots, but exit polls, precinct-level reporting, and the wave of enthusiasm for the opposition coalition make it nearly impossible to believe President Maduro's claims of victory are credible. His refusal to release detailed vote tallies that verify this result only exacerbates my concern that he is once again silencing the voices of Venezuelans, who are clearly disillusioned with a Maduro government that has presided over an economic disaster and fueled a migrant crisis as millions of Venezuelans have fled the conditions in their home country. President Maduro must immediately release the full vote tally, and I urge Venezuelan officials to respect the legitimate will of the Venezuelan people."
