Why should I go?
This week, the Coolidge Corner Theatre brings their Science on Screen series to the Rose Kennedy Greenway for a special screening of Godzilla 2000: Millennium. Ignoring the continuity of all previous Godzilla films (except the original 1954 film), this sci-fi action adventure follows a group tracking Godzilla while an alien UFO appears and poses a new threat to Japan. Now the three forces must duke it out.
The film, starring Takehiro Murata, Hiroshi Abe, and Naomi Nishida, will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles.
Science on Screen films are introduced by local experts in science, medicine, and technology, who connect current scientific research or technological advances to that night's movie. This screening will be introduced by Brad Bolman, a postdoctoral member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study. Bolman has a PhD in the history of science from Harvard University, and is the author of the forthcoming book, Lab Dog: What Global Science Owes American Beagles (University of Chicago Press, 2025), which explores how dogs became experimental subjects in eugenics, pharmacology, tobacco research, neuroscience, and more. His current research covers the history of mushrooms, mycology, and fungal science.
Bolman says he plans to briefly talk about the Godzilla franchise, including how fears of nuclear attacks influenced the making of the original films, and basic background on the history and science of nuclear radiation.
