NOW Mourns the Loss of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee – A Strong Advocate for Women and Girls

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Christian F. Nunes, National NOW President, issued the following statement on the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX):

"Women lost a steadfast friend, ally, mentor, and example in the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. For nearly three decades in Congress, she was an unmistakable presence and formidable force in fighting for social justice, fairness, and equity for all. She never hesitated to side with those most in need of a fierce advocate-taking early stands against the Iraq War and as a fighter for LGBTQIA+ rights. And she led the effort to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), making sure Congress did its part to fight the epidemic of domestic violence and stalking.

Sheila Jackson Lee began her career as an underdog and became a household name in her district, a national leader, and a progressive champion we will never forget. Rest in peace and power, Sheila Jackson Lee.
