Unrestrained Motorist Killed in Vermilion Parish Crash with 18-Wheeler

Kaplan - On Sunday, October 13, 2024, shortly after 11:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a two-vehicle fatality crash on Louisiana Highway 14 near Pirates Lane. The crash claimed the life of 62-year-old Mitchell Livings of Kaplan.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2016 Toyota Highlander, driven by Livings, was traveling west on LA Highway 14. At the same time, a 2001 Kenworth 18-wheeler was also traveling west in front of the Toyota. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota failed to slow down and struck the rear of the Kenworth's trailer.

Livings, who was not restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Kenworth was properly restrained and uninjured.

Standard toxicology samples were collected from Livings and submitted for analysis. The driver of the Kenworth was not suspected of being impaired and provided a voluntary breath sample which revealed no alcohol detected.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, distracted and inattentive driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state. Louisiana State Police urges all motorists to stay alert while driving. Additionally, while not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease the chances of serious injury or death. Always ensure every occupant is properly restrained.
