The new Yaris Cross follows the Yaris hatchback in adopting an additional, more powerful hybrid powertrain. This dual hybrid strategy widens the model's customer appeal, particularly to people who want a more compact vehicle, without forgoing power and performance. Around 50 per cent of customers entering the B segment are looking to downsize their choice of vehicle.

The hybrid powertrain is the number one deciding factor for people choosing to buy Yaris Cross. Now they have more choice than ever before: two different hybrid powertrains (a unique-in-class offer) and front or all-wheel drive.

In the 129bhp version, Toyota's 1.5-litre full hybrid system has gained a new transaxle with a larger and more powerful electric motor-generator (MG1). This, together with adjustments to the power control unit (PCU), delivers a 12 per cent increase in total system output, from 114bhp (116 DIN hp/85kW) to 129bhp (130 DIN hp/96kW). At the same time, the MG2 motor's torque has been increased across the entire rev band, with the maximum rising by 30 per cent, from 141 to 185Nm.

The result is faster acceleration, with the 0-62mph time reduced by half a second to 10.7 seconds and the 50-75mph overtaking benchmark brought down by 0.4 seconds to 8.9 seconds (figures for front-wheel drive model). Where CO₂ emissions are concerned, the impact is modest: the new system achieves a best-in-class 109-115g/km, while fuel economy is 58.8mpg. This compares to figures for the 114bhp version of 101-115g/km and 62.7 -55.3mpg.

These statistics are only part of the story; equally significant is the impact on the driving experience. Engine, drive motor and hybrid battery performance have all been maximised. Along with a higher level of torque at all engine speeds, this gives the car a more dynamic and responsive feel with acceleration and deceleration performance that adds enjoyment to every drive, with more responsive performance on urban streets and confident overtaking acceleration on the open road.

The established 114bhp powertrain has built Yaris Cross's reputation for exceptional efficiency (notably the model set a new record in What Car? magazine's "real-world" fuel economy testing). This quality remained a prime consideration in development of the new, more powerful system. Its greater electric power allows for EV driving at higher speeds and it also allows the engine to operate in its high efficiency range more frequently, enhancing fuel economy. At the same time, there's greater acceleration power and sharper response at low speeds.

Further improvement of the engine's thermal efficiency and reduced losses throughout the powertrain through precise control of every element mean less energy is used, CO₂ emissions are reduced, and the vehicle's driving range is improved.

The increased output from the hybrid battery means the engine can operate at lower rpm at start-up and under acceleration. The increase in initial acceleration responsiveness means there is closer co-ordination between the rise in the engine's revs and sound and the vehicle's speed, significantly reducing the "rubber band" effect associated with continuously variable transmissions (CVTs).

NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR MORE EFFICIENT DRIVING

The new hybrid tech features include a function that assists the car's acceleration or deceleration in line with changes in the road gradient. This mitigates the need for additional pressure on the accelerator when driving uphill and provides downhill control, whereby the vehicle is slowed when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator.

In addition, Predictive Efficient Drive learns driver behaviour and road and traffic conditions on routes programmed into the car's cloud-based navigation system. This intelligence is used by the hybrid system to optimise battery charging and discharge control, in line with the road and traffic conditions.

Predictive Deceleration Support collects driving behaviour data which is used to give on-screen indications of route locations - "deceleration support points" - where the driver can come off the throttle to increase fuel and power efficiency. When the accelerator is released, engine braking force is increased to higher than normal levels ('extended regeneration control'), which also allows for more efficient battery charging.

Predictive State of Charge (SOC) Control is another element of Predictive Efficient Drive. This operates in two driving scenarios. First, Downhill SOC Control predicts long downhill route sections from map data and reduces the battery charge level in advance so that more energy can be recovered when descending the slopes. Second, Congestion SOC Control monitors traffic information and, when congestion ahead is indicated, maintains the battery's charge level so that the vehicle can travel for longer in slow moving traffic without the engine having to be started.

The new 129bhp powertrain is featured as standard in the new Premiere Edition and GR Sport Yaris Cross models.

The car's agile, confidence-inspiring performance is further supported by the capability of its GA-B platform, the foundation for the current generation of small Toyota cars.

It delivers the fundamental benefits of a low centre of gravity, with heavier components located low and close to the middle of the vehicle, and a highly rigid body. The result is a stable, composed drive, with reduced body roll and precise chassis response that's faithful to the driver's inputs.

Rigidity is achieved without the penalty of added weight, thanks to advanced construction techniques and the use of strong but lightweight materials in key areas.

A QUIETER DRIVE WITH IMPROVED NOISE AND VIBRATION PACKAGE

The new Yaris Cross benefits from a range of additional measures to reduce noise and vibration. Responding to customer feedback, it was benchmarked against its principal competitors to manage road, engine and wind noise and raise performance to equal class-leading levels.

Where engine noise is concerned, the focus for improvement was on four key areas: a dynamic damper has been added to the left-side engine mount; a resonator has been fitted to the intake hose; the inner dash silencer has been changed from a single layer to a three-layer construction; and an extra layer of felt has been added to the cowl top silencer.

To combat wind and road noise, thicker glass is used for the windscreen as well as front and rear side windows on all new Yaris Cross models.

A FULLY DIGITAL USER EXPERIENCE

Access to information, connectivity and entertainment has been transformed with the introduction of a completely new digital user experience. This includes both a driver's instrument display that can be configured and customised to suit the driver's preference, and a multimedia system that's more powerful, quicker to respond and offers a wider range of functions. The displays are class-leading in size: seven or 12.3-inch for the driver's combimeter, and nine or 10.5-inch for the multimedia touchscreen, depending on grade.

The 12.3-inch combimeter (Excel, GR Sport and Premiere Edition) presents dials, information and graphics in sharp definition for good visibility in all light levels. The driver can customise the display's appearance to suit their mood or the type of journey with four style options: Smart, Casual, Sporty and Tough. There's a further choice of two, one or no dials to create 12 layouts in all, plus a change in background colour according to the drive mode selected - Normal, ECO or Sport.

A digital speedometer and the shift position indicator are centrally positioned in all configurations. Multi-information displays (MID) are positioned centre, left and right; the central section presents important data, such as advanced safety system status; those to either side present details such as journey data, fuel consumption and audio.

The driver can view combinations for the three pages in each MID with ease using control switches on the steering wheel. They can also customise the information on each page on the left and right displays; the centre display content is fixed.

The Premiere Edition is also equipped with a head-up display, giving the driver even more direct access to key driving information.

The seven-inch combimeter is standard on the Icon and Design grade model.

TOYOTA SMART CONNECT

The Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system is designed for easy, intuitive use with quicker response to inputs thanks to increased computing power. Its functions include cloud-based navigation as standard, an "always connected" system that accesses up-to-the-moment information on routes, traffic, and delays for better journey planning.

It has an enhanced, more responsive voice recognition system and an on-board "Hey Toyota" voice agent that can recognise natural, conversational language and requests. For example, say "Hey Toyota, I'm cold" and the system will automatically raise the climate control temperature.

Easy connectivity is designed-in, with wireless smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Design grade provides Toyota Smart Connect with cloud-based navigation function and a 10.5-inch display; Excel, GR Sport and Premiere Edition models feature Toyota Smart Connect+ with additional functions included an embedded navigation system, in addition to the cloud-based system.

The preference profiles of up to three different users can be stored on the system, automatically applying the user's favoured audio and navigation settings. Using the MyToyota app, the owner can also store their setting at their chosen Toyota Centre and access on any other vehicle they use that's equipped with same multimedia system.

EASY ACCESS WITH SMART DIGITAL KEY

Later in 2024, the Yaris Cross Premiere Edition will offer owners the convenience and security of a Smart Digital Key. Linked to the MyToyota app, this will give up to five users access to the vehicle using their smartphone. The digital key can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle - with no need for the phone to be taken out of the user's bag or pocket.

The key is compatible with Apple and Android devices and is provided as standard on the Premiere Edition. One year's connection is included in the car's purchase price.

The MyToyota app provides other useful functions, including remote locking/unlocking, pre-journey climate control operation and activation of the hazard lights to help locate vehicle - for example, in a busy car park.

SAFER, LESS STRESSFUL DRIVING WITH COMPREHENSIVE TOYOTA SAFETY FEATURES

Toyota set out to make Yaris Cross the safest car of its size, equipping it with a wealth of active and passive safety provisions and features that can take much of the familiar stress out of driving.

In the new model, these have been enhanced and extended to be more effective than ever, including the introduction of the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense systems. These features, often extra-cost options or simply not available on other B-SUV models, are provided as standard throughout the new Yaris Cross range.

Adjustment of the functions is made simple, using the control switches on the steering wheel. For example, these can be used to engage the lane trace assist and adjust the distance settings for the dynamic radar cruise control.

Using a new camera and radar system which can scan further and wider than before, there's increased scope for detecting accident risks. For example, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) can now recognise a potential head-on impact, crossing vehicles and a wide range of objects and vehicles in the car's path, including pedestrians, cyclists and now also motorcycles.

Acceleration Suppression is a new addition to the PCS functions. When driving at low speeds, this intervenes to slow any sudden acceleration when it recognises there's the risk of a collision with a vehicle ahead.

The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) has been revised to respond more quickly and operate with a more natural feel. For example, when another vehicle moves into the car's lane, deceleration is more gradual. The vehicle-to-vehicle distance settings have been extended so the driver has more choice to suit their preference, and the system's curve speed reduction is activated earlier, giving smoother speed control.

The DRCC also has new turn signal-linked control and deceleration assist that supports smooth overtaking and rejoining of the traffic lane, at a safe speed and distance from other vehicles.

The driver's forward vision in night-time driving is improved with the first availability of an Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) on the Yaris Cross. This option integrates LED low and high beam operation for more precisely tuned control of the forward lighting, maximising illumination while automatically avoiding the risk of dazzling oncoming drivers.

Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) is another new feature, designed to help avoid familiar accident hazards when driving at low speed. It has three elements: obstacle anticipation assist, deceleration assist and steering assist.

Obstacle anticipation assist is activated when the system detects obstacles ahead that could be collision risks, such as pedestrians crossing or close to the side of the road, cyclists or parked cars. It provides steering and braking assistance to help the driver safely manoeuvre past the hazard.

Deceleration Assist provides smooth deceleration when the driver releases the accelerator to slow down when approaching a slower vehicle ahead, or entering a bend. Steering Assist recognises a bend in the road ahead and adjusts steering force to help the driver make a smooth and stable turn.

The new Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is able to support the driver, should they be taken ill or incapacitated. If it detects the driver has made no inputs - steering, braking, accelerating - over a certain amount of time, it will sound a warning. If there is no reaction from the driver, it will bring the car to a gentle stop, activate the hazard lights, and unlock the doors.

The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) now recognises when the driver has moved out of lane while trying to avoid an obstacle (pedestrian or other road users) and temporarily cancels its warning function. The lane-centring function of the Lane Trace Assist (LTA) has been adjusted so that its performance has a more natural feel - for example, it will follow an offset driving path to avoid passing close to parked vehicles.

The Road Sign Assist has been enhanced so just a one-touch adjustment of the speed limiter is all that's required to match traffic sign information. The vehicle's speed limiter can also now be linked to the RSA to help ensure conformity with changes in speed restrictions.

The Rear Seat Reminder System (RSRS) will alert the driver with visual and sound warnings if they have left a child or pet on the back seat, helping avoid the risk of "hot car" incidents.

Protection is also provided when the car is stationary, with the optional Safe Exit Assist (SEA), a visual and audible warning system helps guard against a door being inadvertently opened into the path of vehicles and cyclists approaching from the rear. This forms part of a Safety Pack that's an option for Design, GR Sport grades (standard on Excel and Premiere Edition). This pack also provides a Blind Spot Monitor; front and rear parking sensors with clearance sonar and auto-braking; and auto-retracting door mirrors.

An Advanced Safety Pack option for the GR Sport further provides a Panoramic View Monitor and Advanced Parking Assist - features that are standard on Excel and Premiere Edition grades.

Up to 10 years/100,000 miles warranty

In common with every new Toyota, Yaris Cross is eligible for Toyota warranty protection for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). This comprises an initial three-year manufacturer warranty, followed by up to a further seven years of service-activated warranty.

For the first three years of the car's life, owners can have it serviced at a place of their choice.
