On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Celebrating resilience and inclusion across the region

The observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024, marked on 3 December every year, comes against the backdrop of pivotal developments in the Arab region. However, despite any vulnerability to the dangers they face, the resilience and determination of persons with disabilities highlight the key role they play in building inclusive societies.

According to previous ESCWA reports, disability prevalence rates in Arab countries were below the world average of 15%. Although persons with disabilities are always confronted with numerous challenges, including limited access to healthcare, assistive devices, and social support systems, they continue to inspire their communities. "Their efforts to overcome adversity and contribute to education, work, and community life reflect a profound commitment to fostering progress and unity," underscored ESCWA Social Affairs Officer Rania Al Jazairi.

However, ongoing conflicts and crises in the region have compounded their difficulties, creating barriers to essential resources and inclusion. Displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and societal exclusion remain significant hurdles. "These challenges highlight the urgent need for inclusive humanitarian responses and policies that ensure dignity, accessibility, and equality for all," Al Jazairi stressed.

"This Day serves as an opportunity to honour the unwavering spirit of persons with disabilities, recognizing their positive impact and the collective responsibility to advocate for a future where their rights are upheld, and their contributions celebrated," she added.

The Arab region has the ability to embrace diversity and empower all its members.
