UCI Health spine surgeon: Professional respect improves patient care

IN THE NEWS: UCI Health spine surgeon Dr. Yu-Po Lee recently spoke to Becker's Spine Review about the a lesson he learned early in his career and how it influences his practice today at the UCI Health Comprehensive Spine Center.

"Spine surgeons, like all physicians, are part of a very small community. It is important to keep in mind how important it is to be respectful and considerate to others in our community.

"Early in my career, a patient to whom I had recommended surgery went to seek a second opinion from another local surgeon. The other surgeon explained to the patient that he agreed with my decision and expressed confidence in me. Because of that, the patient felt much more comfortable with me, and it made the rest of my interactions with that patient much easier."

Lee is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in spine surgery with a focus on adult degenerative conditions. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery to treat diseases such as disc herniation, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, tumors and trauma.

Lee is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and North American Spine Society. He has authored more than 100 chapters and articles on minimally invasive spine surgery. He is nationally recognized for excellence in spinal surgery and patient care.
