WASHINGTON - NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson released the following statement mourning the passing of Alma Powell:

"We know that, in the political world, the women who are often most overlooked, are also the most impactful. Alma Powell, wife of NAACP Spingarn Medalist and Statesmen Colin Powell, was a force to be reckoned with. As a matriarch and military wife, Alma Powell led her family forward to greatness, supporting her husband as he ascended through our nation's ranks of power at a time where Black governing power was few and far between.

From her work to advance cultural enrichment at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, to her advocacy for HBCUs, Alma set an example for paying it forward. It is with great sorrow that the NAACP sends our condolences to the Powell family on their enormous loss. Every day, we continue to honor the legacy of those who've left us, knowing that we would not be where we are today without their contributions. The Powell legacy will live on for generations to come as Black Americans take their rightful positions in places of power."
