Traffic Will be Diverted to Southbound North Grand Island Bridge

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced closures on the North and South Grand Island Bridges this weekend.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 20 through 9 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 21, the left northbound lane on the South Grand Island Bridge will be closed. The closure will allow crews to inspect the structure as required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards every two years. Crews will also perform routine maintenance on the bridge while it's closed.

Motorists are urged to be alert and follow the posted work zone speed limits. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, the northbound North Grand Island will be closed to all traffic from 6:30 a.m. through 10 a.m. Traffic traveling northbound on the Niagara Thruway (I-190) entering Niagara Falls will be diverted to a single lane on the southbound North Grand Island Bridge throughout the duration of the closure. Additionally, the on-ramp to the North Grand Island Bridge from the Niagara Scenic Parkway will be closed.

The bridge closure is to accommodate the Pedal for Parks bike ride. This is the first time any of the spans have been closed for non-vehicular traffic.

Information on the closures is posted on Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) in the Grand Island area.
