UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

57th session

Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on the report by OHCHR on addressing the challenges and barriers to the full realization and enjoyment of the human rights of the people of the Marshall Islands, stemming from the State's nuclear legacy

4 October2024

EU statement

Mr. High Commissioner,

The European Union thanks the Office for its report. It refers to a number of principles and rights that the EU generally agrees to.

With regard to the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, the EU recognizes the need for States, in cooperation with international organizations and civil society, to create favourable conditions to ensure the full enjoyment of the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health and to address the underlying and social determinants of health.

With regard to the enjoyment of the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, the EU actively engages in discussions on advancing this right and promoting inclusion and non-discrimination. The EU also recognizes that, while the human rights implications of environmental damage are felt by individuals and communities around the world, the consequences are felt most acutely by those segments of the population that are already in vulnerable situations.

High Commissioner,

Promoting universal adherence to and the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a key priority for the EU. We therefore urge all States to abide by a moratorium on nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosion, and to refrain from any action that would defeat the object and purpose of the Treaty.

High Commissioner, how can your Office contribute to the broader discussion on the need for a clean, healthy and sustainable environment?

Thank you.
