Scott Celebrates 89th Anniversary of Social Security with Visit to Hampton Senior Center

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Today,Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) marked the 89th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act into law by visiting Hampton Senior Center. The Social Security program, including Social Security Disability Insurance, protects our seniors, veterans, children and people with disabilities. The program ensures beneficiaries can pay rent, buy groceries, and fill their prescriptions.

"People across the country rely on the Social Security benefits they have earned," said Congressman Scott. "I had a good conversation with seniors today about how Social Security has enabled them to pay their bills and retire with dignity. In light of Project 2025 and ongoing efforts by Republicans to weaken or cut Social Security, I will remain steadfast in my support of this vital program.

There are over 140,000 Social Security recipients in Virginia's Third Congressional District who receive monthly benefits.

Congressman Scott is a cosponsor of the Social Security 2100 Act, which would strengthen Social Security by making sure the wealthy pay their fair share and it would improve benefits for recipients. A fact sheet on the bill can be found by CLICKING HERE.
