Speaker Heastie Continues Annual Statewide Tour in Cheektowaga with Assemblymember Wallace

Speaker Carl Heastie today continued his annual statewide tour in Cheektowaga with Assemblymember Monica P. Wallace, announcing a total of $2 million for the Harlem Road Pump Station and visiting Cheektowaga Town Park.

"My annual statewide tour gives me the opportunity to visit different corners of the state, seeing first hand the needs of communities as well as their successes and it's great to be here in Cheektowaga with Assemblymember Wallace," Speaker Heastie said. "It's critical that we invest in updating and upgrading our states aging sewer infrastructure, and this funding will help to do that, keeping Harlem Road Station from reaching failure and backing up into the homes of Cheektowaga families."

The funding we announced today will help maintain the key Harlem Road Pump Station to ensure that it continues to protect over 5,500 Cheektowaga homes and businesses from a potential sanitary sewer overflow. I'm also glad we could see other investments made by the state in Cheektowaga Town Park, including the new Polish-American public art piece and the new, soon-to-be-completed pickle ball and street hockey courts," Assemblymember Wallace said.

The Harlem Road Pump Station was originally built in 1939 and is a bypass station for Cheektowaga, keeping the sewer system from backing up into homes during wet weather events. Last year it was discovered there was full failure in one of the three link seals around the piping from the wet well to the dry well station. The $2 million in funding announced by Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Wallace today will allow for a complete upgrade of the station, saving it from failure and protect homes from sewer backups.

Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Wallace also toured Cheektowaga Town Park, visiting athletic courts and town pool. They also saw the Polish Arts Sculpture, which honors the history and culture of Polish heritage in Western New York and was funded in the State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2021-22 Enacted Budget.
