Bates, an African American visionary with a storied career that spans several decades in the tech industry, brings a wealth of experience and a track record of transformative leadership to the role.

Raised in Detroit, Bates navigated the predominantly white tech corridors without a formal degree. His career has been marked by significant roles at major organizations, including the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Marines, General Motors, Lenovo and Deloitte, where he served in capacities ranging from North American lead IT security manager to global chief technology officer.

In his new role with UM-Flint, Bates will leverage his extensive industry experience to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application, preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce. His focus will be on crafting innovative programs that equip students with essential skills, ensuring they emerge not only as job-ready but as industry leaders upon graduation.

"Timothy Bates embodies the spirit of innovation and inclusivity that we strive to foster at the College of Innovation and Technology," said Christopher Pearson, CIT dean. "His remarkable journey from a curious teenager to a revered figure in the tech industry offers invaluable lessons in perseverance, strategic thinking and the power of education. We are thrilled to have him on board as we endeavor to dismantle barriers to success and empower a new generation of tech leaders."

Bates' partnership with the university aims to make education in technology accessible to all, particularly marginalized communities. He is determined to leave a lasting legacy that transcends the conventional pathways to success in the tech field, inspiring students to pursue their dreams with determination and vision.

"I am honored to join UM-Flint and contribute to shaping the future of technology and education," said Bates. "This role offers a unique opportunity to impact lives directly, ensuring that the next generation of tech innovators is diverse, well-equipped, and ready to tackle the challenges of the future. Together, we will break codes and barriers, creating a legacy of innovation and inclusivity."

Bates is a sought-after speaker in the tech industry addressing artificial intelligence, immersive technology, blockchain and cybersecurity. He advises tech start-ups as a fractional CTO, giving them the competitive edge of his extensive background.
