Bern, 21.06.2024 - Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin will preside over the Ministerial Conference of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in Geneva on 24 June. Together with the responsible ministers of the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, he will discuss in particular the future prospects of free trade policy in an increasingly difficult trade environment. The modernised free trade agreement with Chile will also be signed on the margins of the ministerial conference.

Under the chairmanship of Mr Parmelin, the EFTA ministers will discuss the current status of ongoing work and the outlook for the free trade policy of the EFTA states. They will also exchange views on the future prospects of EFTA's free trade policy. The importance of EFTA as a shared platform for trade and economic cooperation in a multifaceted and increasingly complex global environment will also be part of the discussions. Finally, the EFTA countries' relations with the EU and horizontal issues of the EU internal market will be discussed.

The ministers will also meet with EFTA's consultative bodies to discuss EFTA's activities and the main items on the agenda.

On the margins of the ministerial conference, the four ministers will sign the protocol of amendment to modernise the 2003 EFTA-Chile Free Trade Agreement together with Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren Stork.
