Statewide Report Card coupled new with student survey draw picture of Oregon

The Oregon Department of Education paired the release Monday of the 2023-24 Oregon Statewide Report Card with the publication of the Student Educational Equity Development Survey.

The SEED Survey was piloted for three school years before becoming fully operational in 2023-24. It was offered to all Oregon students in grades three through 11. More than 169,000 students responded to questions about themselves, their schools and their educational opportunities. Students' perspectives add context to the report card data, according to ODE.

ODE highlighted some survey findings, including:

• 91% of students say an adult at their school cares about them.
• 83% of students say they feel welcome at school.
• 78% of students in grades 9-11 say they have opportunities to take courses that will help them achieve their goals.

The annual report card compiles mostly previously released data on Oregon K-12 schools, everything from student achievement to staff compositions to national comparisons. The report shows Oregon staff and students are becoming more diverse in a variety of areas even as enrollment falls. Teacher numbers decreased slightly while support staff and special education staff numbers increased significantly in 2023-24.

The 82-page Statewide Report Card gives a wider view of the data released last week in At-A-Glance reports. For instance, the At-A-Glance reports for many districts included encouraging improvements in attendance and high school freshmen's progress toward graduation. The report card shows statewide positive trends in those areas with three years of data for various groups and grade levels.
