Construction on the two-way conversion of Fifth Street is underway. Here’s what to expect

Construction on the Central City Mobility project is reaching its final phase with the upcoming conversion of Fifth Street from a one-way to two-way street.

Work has been underway along Fifth Street for several weeks, focused on signal installation and concrete work. The upcoming activities include pavement resurfacing on Fifth Street starting Aug. 19 that will bring major activity and work trucks to the street.

Parking restrictions and towing enforcement will be in place beginning Aug. 14 with resurfacing work expected to be complete by Aug. 26.

"This paving of work will bring us closer to converting the street, but it won't happen immediately afterward," said Philip Vulliet, project manager and senior engineer with the Department of Public Works.

After the resurfacing is applied there will be temporary striping in place and the street direction will remain one-way under its current lane configuration. The opening of the new southbound direction of travel on Fifth Street will occur following the final striping and signal turn on work, which will occur several blocks at a time starting around the beginning of September.

This work will start at the south end of the corridor and proceed northward and is expected to be complete by the end of September.

Once the conversion is completed, Fifth Street will provide bi-directional access for cars and bikes from H Street to Broadway.

"This change will improve access and better connect neighborhoods while also calming traffic as two-way streets generally promote lower vehicular speeds than one-way streets," Vulliet said.

The Central City Mobility project is providing safety and transit improvements in downtown and midtown, expanding the protected bikeway network on the grid with over 100 blocks of bikeway and safety improvements.
