Awards From National Association of Hispanic Journalists

Sharing the wonderful news that The Times has won two Ñ Awards from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, for work that sheds light on issues affecting Latino communities.

Edgar Sandoval won the award for excellence in print/digital journalism for "Two Children, a Burst of Gunfire and the Year That Came After," a story where he chronicled the recovery and lives of two of the young Latino survivors of the school mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers died.

Verónica Gabriel Cárdenas, a freelance photographer, won the award for photography for her images in "On the Texas Border, Folk Healers Bring Modern Touches to Their Ancient Practice," a piece that helped demystify an aspect of ancient Latino culture: folk healers known as curanderas.

Adrian Martinez Chavez, another freelance photographer, was also named a finalist in the photography category for his photos in "The Family Restaurant," a photo essay that focused on his family's Mexican restaurant in a Connecticut suburb. The essay illustrated how no-frills businesses with small but loyal followings can be as much about family as they are about food.
