The campus community is invited to attend Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 4:30 p.m. at the Church of the Gesu to kick off the year and celebrate this annual, joyous Mass.

In a change from recent years, undergraduate, lecture-based classes will break from meeting between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 4 to allow all students - regardless of religious affiliation - to attend the Mass. Graduate and professional courses - including those taught by the Law School and the School of Dentistry - as well as undergraduate labs, clinicals and field-based classes will be held at their usual times.

Mass of the Holy Spirit is a tradition in Jesuit education dating back 450 years and is practiced globally by Jesuit educators.

"We're excited to bring the entire campus together for a Mass that invokes and invites the Holy Spirit to bless our community," says Rev. John Thiede, S.J., vice president for mission and ministry. "While the Mass will be a Roman Catholic liturgy, we respect and honor all of the faith perspectives in our community and welcome everyone to join in the celebration. We hope to fill Gesu church with faculty, staff and students!"

"As we welcome our returning students back from summer break and the Class of 2028 to campus for the first time, ensuring a sense of belonging for every student on campus is critical and there is no better way to do that than by grounding ourselves in our Ignatian principles together at this Mass," says Dr. John Su, vice provost for academic affairs and students success. "Mass of the Holy Spirit is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a campus and imagine what we will accomplish this upcoming academic year and how we can put it into practice."
