Geisinger hospitals receive multiple national recognitions for heart care

Three Geisinger hospitals were recently honored by the American Heart Association for the life-saving care they provide to patients.

Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center have received the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline® STEMI Receiving Center Gold Plus recognition.
"Our hospitals and our care teams are committed to providing the best possible care for heart attack patients," said George Ruiz, M.D., cardiology department chair at Geisinger. "Geisinger's STEMI program was designed to achieve these same goals, and we're honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication and achievement in cardiac care."
Each year, about 285,000 people in the U.S. have this type of heart attack, caused by a complete blockage in a coronary artery. Nearly 40% of people who go to the emergency room with acute coronary syndrome are diagnosed with a STEMI. As with all heart attacks, timely treatment is key to restoring blood flow as quickly as possible.
"It's important that we move quickly and deliver the best care with the best chance of survival and recovery when a patient is experiencing a heart attack," said Cinde Bower-Stout, RN, manager of cardiovascular quality at Geisinger.
Recognition as a STEMI Receiving Center is designed to showcase hospitals that provide 24/7 support for STEMI. These facilities coordinate with a network of referring hospitals and emergency medical services to provide guideline-directed STEMI and NSTEMI care.
Geisinger Medical Center was also recognized with the AHA's Aortic Stenosis Honor Roll and the Get with the Guidelines Heart Failure Gold Plus. Both awards highlight the lifesaving care provided during a cardiac emergency.
