KERRIGAN IN THE WASHINGTON TIMES: Time to Fight Back Against Patent Assaults

By SBE Council at 20 August, 2024, 11:15 am

In her latest Washington Times Op-ed, SBE Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan writes that policy changes are needed to restore intellectual property (IP) reliability, enforceability and fairness. She notes:

"Just as with traffic rules, IP protections serve their purpose only when firmly and consistently enforced. But President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have made enforcing these protections harder."

She covers the various ways that IP protections have been eroded, or are being threatened, and what's at stake:

"Without an aggressive effort to fortify IP rights, our economy could lose its most essential sources of ingenuity, entrepreneurship and growth. As of 2019, IP-intensive industries supported over 62 million jobs, accounting for over 40% of domestic economic activity."

Kerrigan then reviews the various reforms that are needed, including two bills currently before Congress - the PERA and PREVAIL Acts - that would help to shore up and strengthen IP protections.
