BOROUGH PRESIDENT GIBSON`S STATEMENT ON CITY COUNCIL VOTE IN SUPPORT OF BRONX METRO-NORTH AREA PLAN

"I want to thank the City Council for voting today in support of the Bronx Metro-North Area Plan, which will bring transformative changes to the East Bronx. This landmark initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing our housing crisis and investing in the future of our borough."

"The rezoning and infrastructure investments will add approximately 7,000 new residential units, providing much-needed housing and homeownership opportunities in our community. This is a crucial development amidst the ongoing housing crisis and will help ensure that more Bronx residents have access to affordable and quality housing. Furthermore, the $500 million capital investment package is a game-changer for the East Bronx. This comprehensive commitment includes:

• $119 million for renovations and upgrades to local parks and open spaces, enhancing recreational opportunities and green spaces for families and residents.

• $12 million for school improvements, ensuring that our children have access to better educational facilities and resources.

• $189 million for street improvements, enhancing safety and accessibility with new lighting, sidewalks, crossings, and road reconstruction on major corridors.

• $170 million for essential infrastructure improvements, including sewer upgrades, water line repairs, and other critical investments to support our borough`s growth and flood resilience."

"These investments will not only stimulate the local economy but also revitalize key corridors surrounding the forthcoming Metro-North stations. The commitment to improving our streets and public spaces, coupled with the expansion of housing, underscores a forward-thinking approach to urban development that will benefit the East Bronx for generations to come."

"I want to thank the New York City Council, Mayor Eric Adams, the New York City Department of City Planning, as well as our East Bronx residents, Community Boards, and other pertinent stakeholders whose voices were essential to developing this comprehensive plan. This initiative will undoubtedly enhance the quality of life for Bronx residents and further solidify our commitment to building a stronger, more equitable borough."
