Safety and Wellbeing of Ohioans at the Heart of Building Safety Month
COLUMBUS, Ohio- During the month of May, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Industrial Compliance (DIC) is recognizing the International Code Council's (ICC's) Building Safety Month. While the annual campaign strives to raise awareness about building safety throughout May, the Division is using this occasion to highlight its efforts to protect Ohioans 12 months of the year.
The Division supports building safety across Ohio through several of its bureaus and boards, including:
- Board of Building Standards (BBS) - BBS formulates and adopts the state's building codes, which keep Ohioans safe whether they are in a public building or their home.
- Bureau of Building Code Compliance (BCC) - BCC administers the building code.
- Board of Building Appeals (BBA) - Works with BBS and BCC to facilitate appeal hearings and interpret the codes.
- Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) - OCILB promotes building safety by issuing licenses to qualified electrical, HVAC, plumbing, hydronics and refrigeration contractors who successfully pass the required licensing exams.
One of the most visible ways DIC ensures building safety throughout Ohio is through its certified inspectors and plans examiners. Plans examiners review building plans that are submitted for review and make sure those plans are drawn up to meet certain specifications set by Ohio's building codes. Meanwhile, building, electrical, plumbing, elevator, escalator, and boiler inspectors conduct thousands of inspections annually across the state to make sure new and renovated construction projects are compliant with the state's building codes, and that current systems are properly maintained.
Through these inspections, DIC's plans examiners and inspectors help to ensure all Ohioans are safe anytime they enter a public building.
The theme of this year's Building Safety Week is "Mission Possible" and all of our dedicated building professionals help make the mission of building safety possible on a daily basis.
