WSU Medical Laboratory Science collaborates with University of Salford in the UK
The Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Medical Laboratory Science program and University of Salford-Manchester (U.K.) biomedical students recently engaged in a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) experience.
The goal of the transatlantic endeavor was to assess the impact of how engaging in laboratory activities influences internationality, skill development, confidence, engagement, career planning and perceived employability. The collaboration was led by Wayne State Assistant Clinical Professor of MLS MaryAnne Stewart alongside the University of Salford's Matthew Jones and Pika Miklavc.
"By all accounts, this was a remarkably successful international online collaboration between Wayne State University and the University of Salford," said Stewart. "The dedication, teamwork and shared passion of these groups have surpassed geographical boundaries, fostering a global community focused on education and innovation."
While working together to complete a time-constrained task, the students taught one another about the differences between their countries, improving lab and digital skills in a fun and dynamic setting.
This aligns with Wayne State University's College to Career initiative, which seeks to provide every student with experiential learning opportunities that allow them to encounter the world, gain deeper insights and new perspectives, and prepare for prosperous careers
"COIL brought together students from the U.S. and the U.K. to enhance their internationality and teamwork capabilities, in line with skills required in their respective health care sectors," said Jones. "These opportunities are excellent for introducing students to international learning and highlighting their roles within a global health care community, opening their eyes to experiences beyond their country of study."
Miklavc agreed, saying, "COIL showcased remarkable examples of group work and information exchange. It was delightful to see how much enthusiasm for biomedical lab work is shared between students from different parts of the world."
The bachelor of science in Medical Laboratory Science is offered through Wayne State's Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with an application deadline of May 1. Medical laboratory scientists work behind the scenes to provide critical information to doctors through medical tests. In fact, lab results inform more than 70% of diagnoses, allowing doctors to tailor treatment plans and therapies to each patient. Medical laboratory scientists may also pursue careers in medical information systems technology, research and design new testing methods, or go on to medical school.
