CONGRESSMAN BISHOP COMMEMORATES ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11 TERRORIST ATTACKS

September 11, 2024
WASHINGTON -Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), a senior Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, reflected on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States and issued the following statement:

"I was in Washington, DC, on September 11, 2001, when our country was rocked by the deadliest terrorist attack in history. Tragically, the attacks claimed the lives of 2,977 people and injured thousands of others.

"It is important that we remember those who lost their lives or were affected by this senseless tragedy, especially the first responders who selflessly risked their lives and went into harm's way to protect others and save lives. We owe them a great debt. Many died while others were left with lasting wounds, both visible and invisible.

"Today, let us remember that there is more that binds us together as Americans than separates us. We must always use our power to overshadow those who seek to stoke fear, anger, uncertainty, and division in order to weaken us.

"Let us recall the solidarity and resilience of the American people as the smoke and dust cleared in the days, weeks, months, and years following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The United States unrelentingly pursued the terrorists involved. In 2011, President Obama solemnly announced that Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind of this heinous crime, had been killed in the process of apprehending him. And, though the terrorists attempted to wipe away symbols of American power and greatness, we were able to quickly rebuild, and our nation continues to grow."

"These remain poignant reminders of our country's fierce resolve and collective might."
