Bryan County I-16 at Old Cuyler Road Interchange Project Awarded

SAVANNAH, GA - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced the Design-Build team for the I-16 at Old Cuyler Road Interchange (P.I. 0019451), which is part of a series of roadway improvement projectsdesigned to provide more efficient access to the new Hyundai Metaplant site and the surrounding area. The 1.2-mile project consists of the construction of a new interchange along I-16 at Old Cuyler Road, including three, multilane roundabouts large enough for anticipated freight vehicle traffic and everyday users.

Matthews-McLendon, a joint venture between C.W. Matthews and McLendon Enterprises, Inc., was selected to complete the final design and construction of the $74.5 million interchange, which will intersect with the new I-16 Frontage Road that is currently under construction to provide additional access to the Hyundai site development, and aid in east-west travel to accommodate future traffic increases. The I-16 at Old Cuyler Road Interchange, along with US 280 Widening (P.I. 0016618) and I-16 Frontage Road (P.I. 0019452) projects are intended to improve surrounding infrastructure for all users, including the local communities it serves.

Georgia DOT anticipates construction of the I-16 at Old Cuyler Road Interchange will begin in the third quarter of 2025. The project is expected to reach substantial completion in 2027. All dates are subject to change.

Georgia DOT is utilizing the Design-Build delivery method to combine preconstruction-related activities and construction services into one contract. This approach allows contractors to participate in the project's final design, which improves communications, expedites project delivery, and can lead to reduced costs.
