Cooling sites available during today's extreme heat

Friday, Aug. 2, 2024 - Hampton has established cooling sites for anyone needing relief from the heat today.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat advisory from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., with forecasts calling for temperatures in the mid-90s and heat indexes reaching 110 degrees. The city's libraries, community centers and neighborhood centers will be available for any residents who need relief from the heat.

All public library branches will be open until 7 p.m. Community centers will be open until 8, and neighborhood centers until 6. Click here for a list of library branch locations, and click here to find neighborhood and community centers.

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors if possible during the hottest part of the day. If you are outdoors, drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and try to stay out of the sun. Check on relatives and neighbors who might be at risk. Do not leave small children or animals unattended in vehicles even for short periods of time, as internal car temperatures can become lethal very quickly.
