Newton Sanitary Landfill Highlights Q1 Project Updates, Winter Hours, and Financials

The Newton Sanitary Landfill completed key projects and saw strong financial performance in the first quarter of FY 2024-2025, alongside a busy schedule of recycling and community initiatives.

Winter Hours Begin November 1

The landfill's winter hours will start on November 1, with weekday hours from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month open from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Summer hours will resume on April 1.

Q1 Landfilled and Recycled Totals

During the quarter, the landfill processed 8,409.04 tons of solid waste, while diverting various items to recycling. Recycled materials included 446.83 tons of concrete rubble, 4.29 tons of household recyclables, 15.15 tons of scrap metal, and 201 tires, illustrating a commitment to waste diversion efforts.

Landfill Revenues and Expenses

For July through September 2024, the landfill reported revenues of $569,380.66 against expenses of $515,714.18, showcasing effective cost management and operational efficiency.

Culvert Replacement Project

Following heavy spring rains, landfill staff replaced a 72-inch culvert along the main haul road to Areas B & C at a cost of $30,746.90. The City is working with FEMA to recoup these expenses.

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Overlay Project

This capital improvement project, budgeted at $200,000, was completed in July for $129,401.99. A total of 1,013 tons and 141 square yards of asphalt was laid, increasing road durability.

Electronics and Scrap Metal Recycling Event

Hosted with A-Line Iron and Metals, the September 7 event saw 160 vehicles and a variety of electronics recycled, including televisions, microwaves, and computer towers. Staff reminds residents that electronics can be dropped off year-round at A-Line Iron and Metals in Kellogg, and scrap metal can be accepted at the Newton Sanitary Landfill, Gralnek-Dunitz, and Car Country.

Landfill Mowing

To maintain the grounds, 92 acres are farmed and mowed. The landfill's staff also mow inaccessible areas, which helps maintain a clean and orderly appearance.

These first-quarter highlights reflect Newton Sanitary Landfill's dedication to waste diversion, cost-effective management, and community engagement as it continues to meet local waste processing and recycling needs.
