UPDATE:

The victim has been identified as Mary Kanohokula (71) of Kahului. The Maui Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Ms. Kanohokula's family and friends.

ORIGINAL:

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, at approximately 11:17 a.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on West Wakea Avenue at the intersection with Onehee Avenue in Kahului.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a silver 2024 Lexus SUV executed a left turn from the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center onto West Wakea Avenue when it collided into a pedestrian operating a personal electronic wheelchair, which was traveling northbound within the marked crosswalk on West Wakea Avenue.

As a result of this collision, the pedestrian, a 71-year-old Kahului female, sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment, where she later succumbed to her injuries and died. (The victim's identity is being withheld for 24 hours to allow her family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends).

The operator of the Lexus, a 69-year-old Wailuku female, remained on the scene until police personnel arrived and did not report any injuries.

Investigation reveals that:

The operator of the Lexus was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The airbags did not deploy in the vehicle.

The involvement of speed does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

The involvement of alcohol or drugs has yet to be determined as the investigation remains ongoing.

This is Maui County's ninth traffic fatality of 2024, compared to seven at the same time last year.
