Governor Gianforte Honors Sheridan County Sheriff With Veteran Commendation

PLENTYWOOD, Mont. - Governor Greg Gianforte yesterday recognized Sheridan County Sheriff Lonnie Johnson with the 2023 Montana Governor's Veteran Commendation.

"I was honored to recognize Sheridan County Sheriff Lonnie Johnson with the 2023 Montana Governors Veteran Commendation alongside the support of his wife and fellow V.F.W. members," Gov. Gianforte said. "Montana is home to many outstanding veterans, and it's my privilege to thank them for their service to our country and communities."

During a ceremony held at the Sheridan County Courthouse, the governor read a letter to Sheriff Johnson outlining his life of service in the military and in the community and presented him with a Montana state flag flown over the state capitol in his honor.

"He says this was a long time coming, but I did not expect this, and I don't think I deserve it because a veteran is a veteran, and that's what we do. I will continue to serve my community, alongside my wife who supports me all the way," Sheriff Johnson said of receiving the award.

Johnson served as member of the U.S. Army and Montana Army National Guard and has been recognized with several awards including the Korean Defense and National Defense Service Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

As the governor travels the state, he recognizes veterans nominated by their peers, friends, family, and neighbors for their military service and outstanding commitment to their communities. 39 recipients of the 2023 Montana Governor's Veteran Commendation are being honored this year.

The deadline to nominate an outstanding Montana veteran for the 2024 Montana Governor's Veteran Commendation is Monday, October 21, 2024, at 11:59 MST. The recipients will be announced on Veterans Day and honored in the new year.
