Fall semester graduates celebrated at reception

Eastern Connecticut State University hosted a reception on Dec. 4 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center lobby for December 2024 graduates, celebrating a milestone in the students' lives.

A total of 153 students completed their degree requirements during the semester. Criminology and sociology Professor William Lugo congratulated the graduates and reflected on their journey since their first semester at Eastern, noting their growth academically, professionally and personally.

"You're not the same person you were four years ago; you've learned from your experiences here," Lugo said.

He also acknowledged the challenges students have faced, many unrelated to their coursework. "You should be proud of yourself for this accomplishment despite the difficulties," Lugo added.

Several senior English majors shared their thoughts and feelings on their Eastern experiences, as well as their plans after graduating. Maddie Collins offered remarks on behalf of the graduates. She thanked the faculty and staff for their support in helping students grow and learn.

A highly involved student on campus, Collins worked as a resident assistant, served as a student orientation counselor and participated in numerous clubs. She encouraged her peers to remain hopeful in their career paths. "Wherever you go, there is a new opportunity to grow into the person you want to be," she said.

Olivia Gardner shared her plans to stay at Eastern to pursue a master's degree in secondary education. "I loved being involved on campus; every event the Campus Activity Board (CAB) puts on is so fun," Gardner said. She also worked as a student leader for the Center for Community Engagement and shared her passion for volunteering and giving back to the community.

Emma Bussolotta announced her plans to start a master's program in library science. She reflected on memorable moments, such as presenting at Eastern's CREATE conference twice and participating in English Night. "Being able to share my work with my family and friends was awesome," Bussolotta said.
